Rifaximin is a rifamycin antibiotic that acts locally in the gut by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, with minimal systemic absorption. It is primarily used to treat traveler's diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli and to reduce the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy in adults with cirrhosis.

What Rifaximin is

Rifaximin targets bacteria in the digestive tract and has very limited entry into the bloodstream. It is supplied in oral form and comes in strengths designed for different conditions. Because most of the drug stays in the gut, side effects are typically mild and localized.

What conditions it treats

The medicine is approved for traveler's diarrhea caused by noninvasive E. coli and for reducing episodes of overt hepatic encephalopathy in adults with cirrhosis. In some regions it is also used for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) after a clinician’s evaluation. Your doctor will determine if this medicine is appropriate for your situation.

Practical usage guide — timing, food, missed doses, storage

Take exactly as directed. Dosing depends on the condition and may range from a short 3‑day course for traveler's diarrhea to longer plans for IBS‑D or hepatic encephalopathy. Take with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food unless your clinician specifies otherwise.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is near the time for your next dose. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose, and contact your clinician if you miss several doses in a row.

Store at room temperature in the original bottle, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not share tablets or capsules, and discard any leftover product according to local guidelines.

What to watch for and when to consult a doctor

Common side effects include nausea, gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and headache. If you develop severe, persistent diarrhea, dehydration, fever, or blood in stools, seek medical advice promptly. Signs of an allergic reaction—rash, swelling, trouble breathing—require urgent care.

Inform your clinician if you have liver disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take other medicines. If symptoms worsen or you have new or unusual symptoms, contact a health professional.
