What Meloxicam is

Meloxicam was approved for medical use in the late 1990s and is one of the most widely prescribed NSAIDs around the world. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that lowers pain and swelling by reducing chemicals that drive inflammation. Meloxicam mainly blocks an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) with some activity on COX-1, which can help limit stomach irritation compared with some older NSAIDs.

You take Meloxicam by mouth. It is usually given as a tablet or capsule and is often taken once daily. The dose depends on your condition, age, and how well your kidneys work. Do not take more than your doctor prescribed, and keep taking it for as long as advised unless you notice problems.

Meloxicam may be prescribed in different strengths. It should be swallowed with water, with or without food. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double up unless your clinician says it is okay.

What it is used for

Meloxicam is used to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness from inflammatory conditions. It is commonly used for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, helping you move more easily and feel less sore.

It can also help with ankylosing spondylitis and other inflammatory joint problems. Some people use it for short-term relief of acute flare-ups of musculoskeletal pain as directed by a doctor.

Your healthcare provider will decide if Meloxicam fits your situation. The goal is to reduce inflammation while balancing any risks from taking an NSAID. Your response to the medicine helps guide how long you stay on it.

Contraindications and precautions

Do not take Meloxicam if you have a known allergy to meloxicam or other NSAIDs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Severe allergic reactions can occur, so seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, swelling, or a skin reaction.

Avoid Meloxicam if you have active or a history of serious stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding. It can worsen these problems. Do not start it if you have significant kidney or liver disease without a doctor’s guidance.

People with heart failure, high blood pressure, or fluid build-up in the body should use caution. Meloxicam can affect kidney function and blood pressure, especially in people who are older or have heart or kidney disease. If you are pregnant, particularly in the late stages, talk with a clinician before using Meloxicam. It may not be safe in pregnancy.

Before taking Meloxicam, tell your clinician about all health issues you have, including stomach or intestinal problems, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, asthma, nasal polyps, or a history of ulcers. Also share all medicines you take, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Ask about the safest use if you have planned surgery or dental work.

Meloxicam can interact with other medicines and substances. Your clinician may adjust your dose or monitor you more closely. Avoid alcohol, which can increase stomach irritation and bleeding risk while you take Meloxicam.

Side effects by frequency

Common side effects include upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, dizziness, and mild headaches. You might notice these early on and they often improve with time or with food.

Less common side effects can include diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, or a feeling of lightheadedness. Some people notice a rash, itching, or nasal congestion.

Serious but rare effects include stomach or intestinal bleeding, ulcers, severe allergic reactions, liver or kidney problems, swelling, or severe skin reactions. Seek urgent help if you develop severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, or swelling of the face or limbs.

Interactions with other substances

Meloxicam can increase the risk of bleeding if you take blood thinners, higher-dose aspirin, or certain antidepressants. It can also irritate the stomach more when used with alcohol or other NSAIDs. Do not combine these without your clinician’s guidance.

Combining Meloxicam with diuretics (water pills) or medicines for high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors or ARBs) can affect kidney function or blood pressure. Your clinician may monitor your kidneys and adjust doses if needed.

Other medicines to discuss include lithium, methotrexate, warfarin, steroids, and certain heart or cancer drugs. Always tell your doctor about all medicines you use, so they can check for interactions. If you notice unusual bleeding, swelling, or changes in urination, report them promptly.
